On Saturday, June 6, 2026, Mui Kwok Temple in Edmonton hosted an outdoor gala celebrating Vesak Day (Buddha’s Birthday). The weather in Edmonton in the days leading up to the event was overcast and rainy, however the day was warm and sunny. Even more remarkably, some patrons observed auspicious cloud formations in the sky, filling them with inner peace, joy and reverence. This surely is a blessing from the Triple Jewel to encourage and promote Buddha’s teachings.

The celebration began at 9:30 a.m. with powerful drum performances from Yuet Wan Cultural Association. The deep, resonant sound of the drums echoed through the temple grounds, opening the day with both energy and dignity. Next a Lion Dance performance provided festive energy, bringing blessings, vitality, and auspiciousness to the event. The performers also interacted playfully with the audience, creating moments of laughter, warmth, and delight.

Next the abbot delivered an opening speech welcoming guests to this event and wish through this event the importance of Vesak day (Buddha’s birthday) can be shared and celebrated with all. He stressed the importance to not only observe Vesak day in traditional ways through ceremonial rituals and services, but also to embrace new and innovative ideas to spread Buddha’s teaching to all. This gala being the first of its kind is one way to further promote the Buddha Dharma.

The monastics of Mui Kwok Temple along with two visiting Thai monks performed a purification ceremony and offering service in front of the main altar set up at the Temple’s main steps, leading the congregation in solemn chanting. The purification ceremony not only symbolizes cleansing of our defilement to reveal our inner Buddha nature, it was also performed around newly planted trees in the temple grounds. The ceremonial cleansing of the new trees symbolizes beautification of the temple grounds but also for the value of nature and our duty to protect it. The offering ceremony once again lets patrons practice generosity and express gratitude to the Buddha on this auspicious day. The two visiting monks also performed a traditional Buddhist chant to bless all with health, prosperity and happiness

After the blessings, twelve lay devotees presented offerings before the Buddha on behalf of the congregation. The different offerings were placed reverently before the altar, symbolized sincere offerings to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

The cultural program then continued with a series of graceful and uplifting performances. The sound of the erhu was gentle and expressive, while the classical dance brought elegance and beauty to the stage. The Tai Chi performances combined stillness and movement, strength and softness, reflecting harmony, balance, and inner peace. Within the temple grounds, members of the congregation sponsored a tree-planting activity. Through this meaningful act, they helped beautify and support the temple environment, while symbolically nurturing wholesome karmic seeds.

The charity bazaar was also a great success. Items for sale included handmade crafts, Buddhist goods, and children’s items generously donated by devotees. The handmade crafts and bead-stringing activities were especially popular among children, filling the area with laughter and excitement. Homemade vegetarian snacks prepared by devotees were also warmly received and quickly sold out. Through joyful giving and sincere participation, the community came together to support the temple and create shared merit.

At noon, Mui KwokTemple offered a delicious vegetarian lunch to all who attended. The meal was simple, wholesome, and prepared with care. In a warm and peaceful atmosphere, participants shared food, conversation, and Dharma joy. The vegetarian meal reflected the Buddhist values of compassion, equality, gratitude, and mindful living.

In the afternoon, the monastic and lay devotees gathered in the main shrine hall for sutra chanting. The sound of the chanting was serene and uplifting, filling the hall with a deep sense of peace and devotion. The assembly prayed for the continued flourishing of the Buddha Dharma, for peace and prosperity, for favorable weather and harmony in society, and for the happiness and wisdom of all beings.

With the compassionate guidance of the monastics, the sincere participation of the dedicated volunteers, the 2026 Vesak Day celebration at Mui KwokTemple came to a perfect and successful completion. Blessed by clear skies, radiant sunshine, and auspicious clouds, the day was filled with joy and serene. May all who took part in this celebration use the occasion of Buddha’s birthday to clear away unease to find inner peace, cultivate compassion for all sentient beings and grow innate wisdom to further practice wholesome deeds.

Homage to our Fundamental Teacher, Shakyamuni Buddha.
May all who attend find happiness, joy and good health!
